Though it is not officially summer quite yet, the fluctuating temperatures here in Toronto demand something Desi~liciously ah-mazing to add to the nostalgic South Asian recipes I’ve been rolling out – more than usual.

Honestly, whether it’s brisk or sunny here, the family loves to chill with a cold and refreshing sweet strawberry lassi drink to celebrate our love of strawberries. Traditionally speaking, though, lassi is summer personified in a drink.

What Is Lassi?

No, you really don’t need a complicated list of ingredients. Truly, it’s an effortless recipe. A lassi drink is an Indian and Pakistani (specifically Punjabi) cold beverage made with yogurt, ice and sugar. Both sweet and savoury varieties exist, with sweetened versions typically adding sugar and featuring fruit or fruit pulp, like mango pulp. I think you may be surprised to hear that some sweet lassi recipes even star rose water and cardamom.

I will never forget watching uncles and aunties take delight in sipping a glass or two of savoury lassi with cumin, post supper, as a means to aid digestion. It’s the perfect pick to accompany my spicy pav bhaji, Indian eggplant curry with potatoes or daal with roasted butternut squash.

Over the years (and across continents!), I’ve tried my fair share of lassi recipes. Admittedly, quite a few have missed the mark – either too thick (more like a smoothie) or far too diluted to provide any real flavour.

I promise you that my smooth, flavourful, and refreshing strawberry lassi has been taste-tested by every member of the Devje crew, including my 7-year old. It’s always guzzled down.:)

The secret? The delicate balance of fruit-yogurt-water. It creates the perfect dreamy consistency. Plus, you’ll be pleased to know that it contains no added sugar and sweetened with a low-calorie sweetener to create an easy and healthy recipe. You may recall I used erythritol to sweeten my latest Indian dessert recipe – Carrot Halwa. Have you tried it yet?

What Is Strawberry Lassi Made of?

Here’s all you need to make sweet strawberry lassi:

  • Fresh strawberries – Ripe strawberries work best in this recipe. If you decide to use frozen strawberries, there’s no need to thaw them.
  • Greek yogurt – While traditional lassi recipes call for regular yogurt, the creaminess of Greek yogurt is heavenly. Plus, the extra protein helps to create a more filling recipe. Remember to opt for unsweetened Greek yogurt and use it straight out of the refrigerator. That way, your lassi will be nice and chilled.
  • Erythritol – This is a great pick for a sweetener if you’re looking to control your intake of added sugar – without compromising on sweetness. Erythritol does not raise blood sugar levels and is an appropriate alternative for diabetes and those looking to adopt a heart-healthy diet.
